In communally strife torn Kashmir, Muslims helped Hindu priests to reopen a temple that had been shut down 17 years ago. The bonhomie witnessed reflected the times when the two communities peacefully co-existed but were torn apart as communal emotions flared up in the region in 1989.

The Tripurasundari temple at Kharnain in Anantnag district of South Kashmir was protected and looked after by the Muslim residents all these years as Hindu Pandit’s (priests) fearing for their lives had fled to other parts of the country.

Lawmaker Mohammed Sartaj was instrumental in building up confidence among the pundits and getting them back to have the temple opened. About 150 pundits, still living in the Kashmir valley, and about migrant 500 pundits, living as refugees in neighboring Jammu city, participated at the re-opening ceremony.

Vinod Pandit, president of All Party Migration Coordination Committee on the occasion asked for communal harmony among all so that the migrants could feel safe to return to their ancestral lands.

Muslims neighbors on their part reassured the Pandit’s and asked them to offer their daily prayers at the temple. They have also undertaken to provide security to the families of the Hindu priests and their place of worship.

Communities of different religions shared good neighborly relations in Kashmir till the rise of fundamentalist Islam in Afghanistan in the mid 1980’s. Mercenary terrorists exported by the then Taliban government found refuge in the unruly north western parts of Pakistan. Easy access into Kashmir valley was able to scour the good relations Hindus and Muslims shared. Still battling the fundamentalist streak of Islam, thousands of youths in the past 20 years have died and real peace is yet to be established in Kashmir.

Sorry to say due to misinformation here is mention that in 1989 there was communal tention, which compel kahmire pandits to migrate.
It is all negative media trial againist Kashmire Muslims.
It is all blessings of Allah that there had been never communal tention in Muslim majorty area valley of Kashmir.Even when millions of Muslims were killed millions compled to migrate to Pakistan in 1947-48 in Hindu majorty area Jammu& same act was done by Muslims againist Hindus in some areas. At that crutial time also in valley kashmire Muslims provide full protection to Hindus.
In 1989 when armed struggle started, due to disturbance both Muslims & Pandits haue migrated, but not due to communal tention. This tragedy has taken place becaue of governor of that time Jag Mohan & some rouge anti human elements.Majorty is from the beggining againist migration of Pandits. As Kashmires haue record of communal harmoney. So if it will be metioned that due to tention between two communities people do migrate,it will be not fair.As a matter of fact Kashmir is incomplete without Pandits.Kashmire pandits haue much role in development of Kashmir. There wasa vital role of Pandits in elemenating illetracy in Kashmir. In so many religious places like AMARNANTH Muslims are performing duties in managment & maintaince, same is case with Muslim pious placeswere pandits are part of managment & maintance. just imagine the brother hood of kashmires. But so to say clear fact behind the migration is not expressed. There were some forces behind the migration of both communities. These forces are enjoying in both sides.Only poor common migrated is victim of hunger.
So it is duty of all peace loving persons to compel their governments to solve Kashmir problem.Which is burden for both countries. Both countries haue apportunity to be sincere with peace perocess. If present Govt;s failed to solve the problem, not only kashmires but both countries haue to suffer .At present liberal president of Pakistan is serious to solve Kashmir problem for ever. Now the bal;lis in the court of India. Both countries should continue peace process in any case.As some self desired elements in both sided are busy to sabotage this peace process. As such elements are enjoying like kings only because of tention of both countries.Kashmires want peace wd honour. They want that migrated kashmires should come back. But it is open secret it can be implemented if both countries will be sincere with peace procerss.

Yes, the disturbance in Kashmir valley is because of conflicting interests of India and Pakistan and the innocent people have been caught up in the crossfire.
But when religous sentiments are flared up, it is bound to cause insecurity among the minority religous community and will most certainly lead to migration.
Its not just Kashmir, the whole region from Afganistan, North West Frontier Province and Kashmir on both sides of the line of control that is a disturbed region where innocent people have had to migrate.
Just today a missile attack has destroyed a Madrasa near the Afghan border in Pakistan and it is an attack by Pakistan army on fellow muslims. In such a war who is the enemy or who the winner is hard to figure out.
You have expressed valid points about a peace loving Kashimiri society. But the disturbance has lasted long and many people have died and suffered for a cause which has not got anywhere.
